. >> reporter: with president obama and mitt romney both in ohio today, the focus is likely to shift back to the economy. rob and paula, back to you. >> thanks a lot, karen. >>> this thursday, it's the candidates for vice president who will meet face to face, and our own martha raddatz will moderate that debate. abc, of course, will carry it live. it all kicks off at 9:00 p.m. eastern time. they say bind could be feeling the pressure. the president did so poorly. now pressure on joe's shoulders to come out there and kind of maybe put -- you know, spark a fire that the president could not. also interesting, came out yesterday from our pollster at "the washington post" is that the composition of the polls has changed a little bit. that can explain some of the shift in the numbers. both in the gallup and pew poll, self-identified democrats, that number was higher in the predebate polls. self-identified republicans were up in the post-debate polls. so the wind has definitely been at romney's back, that's for sure, but the composition changed and changed numbers as well. and that has maybe cha

for their respective candidates. both campaigns aggressively attacking the other over what was said. the romney campaign going after joe biden about his comments about the consulate in benghazi. state department officials testified before a congressional hearing that they had turned down requests for additional security at that consulate. contrast that with what vice president biden said last evening. >> we weren't told they wanted more security there. we did not know they wanted more security again. and by the way we were told exactly, we said exactly what the intelligence community told us, that they knew, that was the assessment. and as the intelligence community changed their view we made it clear they changed their view. >> at the same time right now as this event is going on the white house is saying, well, wait a second, while the say the department knew about the requests the president and the vice president didn't know about them, which might seem to indicate some sort of massive disconnect in the post 9/11 efforts to get all of the government he tk departments talking to each other ab

on the line both men got in their jobs. >> romney is a good man. he cares about 100% of americans in this country. and with respect to that quote, i think the vice president very well knows that sometimes the words don't come out of your mouth the right way. [laughter] it is empty mattally possible. it's been done before. precisely what we're prosing. >> it has never been done before. >> been done a couple times. jack kennedy lowered tax rates. >> oh, now you're jack kennedy. jon: they touched on the biggest issues for americans jobs and the economy. their messages directed at middle class voters. >> can you declare anything off limits? >> mortgage loopholes. higher deductions, from higher income people. >> can you guaranty no one making less than 100,000 have a mortgage deduction impacted? >> this tax as million small businesses. he keeps trying to make you think some movie star, hedge fund guy. >> 97% of the small businesses make less than $250,000 a year. would the no be affected. >> this tax is a million people. a million small businesses. >> does it tax 97% of the american bu

liberal both the way he governed since the 2010 midterms and in his campaigning. and i think the romney campaign and rnc have an ad out right now calling president obama a liberal. identifying him as such for voters which makes voters jobs a little bit easier. this is opening for romney campaign to continue to make that point and tie his policies with that idealogical label. martha: steve, they will be both out in force in ohio over the course of this week. rob portman will be campaigning with mitt romney as will chris christie. talk to me about the tightening in ohio. >> ohio, it is, isn't too much to say ohio is crucial obviously. if you look at the polls i think there was a sense both in public polling and internal polling for the campaigns that ohio was slipping away from republicans in a state that they need to win. now seems there is some tightening. there was a poll out in michigan last night shows president obama only up three points there. if president obama is only up three points in michigan and that's a good poll, it's likely that ohio is back to a dead-heat which insures th

half of those likely voters surveyed think president obama is more moderate th mitt romney. i think by any objective measure that is simply not true. if you look the way president obama has governed both before the 2010 midterms and particularly after the 2010 midterms when he did nothing to moderate his positions. he did not do a bill clinton style shift toe the center where he tried to triangulate. he has been proud, rather aggressive liberal both the way he governed since the 2010 midterms and in his campaigning. and i think the romney campaign and rnc have an ad out right now calling president obama a liberal. identifying him as such for voters which makes voters jobs a little bit easier. this is opening for romney campaign to continue to make that point and tie his policies with that idealogical label. martha: steve, they will be both out in force in ohio over the course of this week. rob portman will be campaigning with mitt romney as will chris christie. talk to me about the tightening in ohio. >> ohio, it is, isn't too much to say ohio is crucial obviously. if you look at th

watches, but really about a cluster, maybe six, eight states will make or break this race. romney made up a lot of ground since last week's debate for sure. >> i don't know if this one will move the needle. both appealed to their base really. joe biden didn't make any fatal flaws. and neither did paul ryan in this one. but, you know let everybody spin it how they want. i looked at six different polls. three gave it to biden. three gave it to paul ryan. >> it's a draw essentially. >> pretty much is a draw. >> again, i know the media's inclination, folk's inclination to pay attention to stylistic issues rather than substantive one -- the water drinking, laughing, grinning, we saw more of joe biden's teeth than his dentist last night. looking at the issues iran taxes, abortion medicare the role of faith, how they govern there are some sharp differences between the two men. i hope people paid attention to that other than the theatrics of the night. >> martha raddatz, our colleague here at abc, i think she did a fantastic job. really just keeping everybody in check. >> martha

, while romney need to convert 2008 obama voters. rob, paula, last night here in kentucky, both of them got a lot of help from their running mates. >> karen, can we say there was a winner? can we call it a draw? i was looking at several polls, three gave it to paul ryan. three gave the to joe biden. was there a winner? or was this a tie? >> yeah, paula those instant reactions were showing voters were evenly split. but i think if you have to pick who really got what they wanted to get out of this debate it was vice president biden. the democrats are very happy because he basically stopped the bleeding from last weak's, the president's performance at last week's debate. he did two things very well. one, he promoted the president's policies and defended the president's record and did it by connecting with voters. and, that's not something that president obama was able to do last week. he also cam out aggressively against the romney policies by going after paul ryan very strongly. that is also something we didn't see last week from president obama. but congressman ryan really held his own t

was saying before and what john has been talking about both here and elsewhere, which is how the romney plan reducing taxes, regulation, cutting spending, will result in a better america and a better life for the american people. >> yeah, dagen, if you were to go get an interview for a job in any business, you would not go in there and sit during the interview trashing the guy that had the job before you. you would try to sell your potential boss, here's what i bring to the table, what i would do, if you hire me to this job. that's the same thing when you're running for office. yet both these guys, maybe they never interviewed for a job, i don't know, but they just want to trash the other guy, and we had 90 minutes of mitt romney being mostly positive about what he would do. and he shot up in the polls as a result. he should make all his commercials that way and the next two debates the same thing. let obama a fester in his own problem. dagen: but is president obama in a tough situation about talking that way about himself in the next debate because of his record over the last -- >> that's a
